Since 2002, Kieran McInerney Architect has designed over 75 terrace houses in urban and regional NSW, establishing our practice as specialists of the typology.
Kieran has studied terrace houses extensively with a large resource library of designs and options. He enjoys the challenge of crafting compelling spaces out of old buildings with limited light, ventilation and nature.
Our approach begins with you; working closely with clients to create an ideal brief for how they want to live. We assess the site to discover the opportunities it offers as well as the constraints to build a profile of design options open for discussion and collaboration.
Ranging from alterations & additions and detached secondary dwellings, we have experience designing and documenting all stages of the process. We provide complete architectural services from feasibility studies, design concept, development applications (DA) & council approvals, detailed design & contract documentation, tendering, contract administration and project management.
Lofty ceilings, a grand kitchen and broad stairs form an inspiring light-filled room for cooking, talking and eating. Deep, high windows top light the space while a long skylight illuminates the kitchen bench.
Folding doors lead to a timber deck shaded by both yellow and red flowered frangipani trees, a lawn and a vegetable garden. Laundry, guest toilet and storage are discreetly located down a few steps. No appliances, fittings or handles are visible in the kitchen, with the exception of the traditional tap-ware.
From the living and entertaining level a screened stair ascends a full flight to the private bedroom floors.
In the main bedroom, large timber doors open to a corner balcony which enjoys north eastern sun and views over the frangipani trees to the harbour.
Simple environmental design and warm natural materials with muted colours create a relaxed, stimulating living space downstairs and a place of calm and repose upstairs.
Two Houses for Kevin is a pair of tiny two-storey Victorian terraces in Woollahra, Sydney. The terraces were 136 years old and 58m2, with small bedrooms and fibro lean-to dominating the rear of the properties. The pair of terraces had virtually no private open space and windows that were overlooked by the neighbours. Kieran McInerney Architect worked on both terraces, doubling the floor area, creating fresh private open space to the rear and generally re-invigorating the two houses through light and space.

Terrace houses offer a pleasant way to live in the city, and have a small physical and environmental foot print.
A sequence of elements bring light into this south facing terrace where linked medium, low and very high ceilings counteract the terrace house tunnel effect.
Warm natural materials with muted colours were used. Broad floorboards are limed to reduce colour and accentuate texture. Timber lining boards are used in preference to plasterboard and render.
A raised front garden, a small courtyard, and a timber lined court lead to the lofty timber room that breaks out of its terrace house confinements.
This proposed laneway studio sits harmoniously within the tight urban context of Paddington. Architecturally designed features aims to bring life and character to the rear lane, whilst maintaining adequate levels of privacy and amenity.
The studio is highly space efficient and relies upon passive ventilation and lighting techniques to improve its energy efficiency.
This architectural intervention helps to modernise the property, bringing new amenity for contemporary living standards.
